The Urban Wilderness

The South Loop links 42 miles of natural-surface trail through forest, quarry lakes, and river bluffs, and the closest trailheads are minutes away. You can be on a trail before work and at a brewery after.

  One of the best-preserved Civil War earthen forts in the country, four miles of trail, the quarry lake, and the overlook with the downtown skyline.

• Baker Creek Preserve and Bike Parkabout 1 mile

  100 acres and eight miles of natural-surface trail from easy to advanced, plus a bike park with jump lines. One of the busiest trailheads in the Urban Wilderness.

• Urban Wilderness Gateway Parkabout 1.5 miles

  The front door to the trail system, at the end of James White Parkway. A new pavilion and playscape opened in February 2026, with restrooms, shade, and water.

• Ijams Nature Center and Mead's Quarry3 miles

  More than 300 acres of trails, paddleboard and kayak rentals on the quarry lake, canopy tours, and the map kiosk for the whole South Loop.

• Suttree Landing Parkabout 2 miles

  Riverfront park on Sevier Avenue with a riverwalk, playground, kayak put-in, and event lawn. The greenway runs toward downtown.
